10 Ways to Refresh Your Beauty Care

It is the start of a new year, new season and before we get busy again, let’s take a moment to refresh our beauty care. By beauty care I mean your makeup, skincare, spa products and hair care. It is a good idea to take stock of how things are working and how things are looking- let’s get it checked off our list now.

Did you know that every beauty care product that you buy has a “best by” or “use by” symbol on it? It is that little open jar symbol on the back of every product and it has a number inside of it. It means, after this product is open (ie, exposed to air), it is good for 6,9,12 months. Now, don’t freak out that all of your stuff is bad…. It’s not. Just be aware of the use by date if your lotions have turned colors or your lipsticks smell bad (rancid animal lard is usually the culprit). My top tip to help you keep track of all of this is: keep a black sharpie in your makeup drawer and date every product when you open it. If you have a bunch opened, date them now, because time flies and you don’t want to be using 5 year old rancid body lotion!

Another great tip is to pull out all of those half used bottles, wipe them clean with alcohol or Wet One and put them out where you can use them. If you have 5 half used bottles of shampoo, split them up in your showers and don’t buy anymore until it’s all gone. Rotating your shampoo is best for your scalp anyway:) Multiple body lotions? Put one on your nightstand, your kitchen counter, where you sit and watch tv, your desk, your crafting space. Make this the winter that your hands stay soft!

It is a bit different when it comes to makeup because makeup does need to be changed out according to the recommendations. Keeping your makeup fresh is essential to your skin and eye health. Industry standards will tell you to change your mascara every 3 months…. See where the sharpie will come in handy?

I highly recommend doing these 10 things to help you keep all of your beauty care up to date and as clean as possible.

  1. Clean your bottles with an alcohol wipe
  2. Sharpen all of your eyeliner and lipliner pencils
  3. Slice off the tops of your lipsticks
  4. Clean your makeup palettes(just the container) with alcohol soaked Q-Tip
  5. Date all of your bottles TODAY ( or when you bought it, if you remember)
  6. Wash your makeup brushes
  7. Pitch used up makeup (if you see the metal well, it’s time)
  8. Wash your makeup bag or drawer container
  9. Use up your half bottles (or pitch them)
  10. Start a new lip balm, contact solution and toothbrush

Don’t forget to check your purse for lip care cleanup. Make this a fun and self care moment and be sure to put your products on display, they are meant to be pretty:)
